Racing Career: Began racing a Holden HB Torana at 15 in the Junior Sedan Division at Geraldton Speedway. Unfortunately the car was under powered compared to the competition although Warren still managed to drive the car to its limit which brought some success. Most importantly, learnt how to drive and maintain a race car while enjoying the sport.
At 18 purchased a front wheel drive Honda Civic to compete in the Modified Sedan division. Learnt quickly that not everyone is as honest and trustworthy as he is, and had to prepare the car to a racing standard (the car had never been raced, despite being informed otherwise). When the car was finally completed it raised the standard of competition to new heights. Although continually handicapped by starting further behind the other cars he kept scoring victories. After completely destroying the car in a massive roll over Warren set about building another Honda Civic, this time from the ground up using his trade skills. Eight months later the new car rolled out of the workshop and could only be described as a work of art. Warren had studied photographs in magazines of the top race cars in the world and crafted the best features into one car. His father, Peter, had assembled a new engine using some of the highest quality components while sponsorship had been forthcoming from local business houses. From the first time the car hit the track the competition knew he meant business. Warren drove the car to the limit and won a bundle of races, often against cars from faster divisions. The division rules started to change however, eventually forcing Warren to abandon the project.
Twelve months later, at just 21, Warren purchased a Super Sedan from a local racer who was retiring from the sport. The car was a 350cui V8 Chevrolet Camaro. Although it was an old car, Warren used it to learn about high powered machinery, and again didn’t disappoint. After initially struggling to come to grips with the car, he gradually honed his skill levels. Despite a few setbacks, he still took a number of chequered flags, winning both the Geraldton Super Sedan Championship and Far Western Championship in his rookie year.
One of the things Warren learnt while racing Super Sedans was the importance of having the correct weight distribution in the car. He also started to realise how much of an advantage it was if the driver could sit on the left hand side of the car (inside of the track).
At this point he was offered a drive in Rob MacGregor’s Late Model. Naturally Warren jumped at the chance, and relished the experience. It took Warren almost three years to purchase and assemble the Late Model he now drives. With a few season’s experience behind him, against some of the best drivers in the nation, he is keen to improve with each performance.
Watch for the Bishop Motorsport #36 to improve with each season.
